Edema and Pregnancy

Many pregnant women notice their feet have become swollen. This is caused by the pressure that is put on the lower limbs, which is often the result of a growing fetus. The medical term for excessive swelling is referred to as edema, and is a common ailment in a large percentage of pregnant women. It is beneficial to wear shoes that are comfortable, and elevating the legs frequently during the day may bring mild relief. Additionally, the feet may swell as a result of high blood pressure. Research has shown if one foot becomes swollen, it may be indicative of an existing medical condition. If you would like additional information about how pregnancy affects the feet, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Leonora Fihman, DPM from California. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Practicing Good Foot Hygiene

When the feet feel good, the overall health of the body is positively affected. There are several methods that can be implemented for daily foot care. These include using warm water to wash your feet every day, applying a good moisturizer, and carefully trimming the toenails. Research has indicated feet are larger in the afternoon, and it is beneficial to purchase shoes in the middle of the day to ensure a maximum level of comfort. If you use community pools, showers or locker rooms, it is advised to wear appropriate shoes, which can help prevent foot conditions such as athlete's foot or toenail fungus. If you would like additional information about proper foot care, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you have.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Leonora Fihman, DPM from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

The plantar fascia is known as the tendon on the sole of the foot that connects the heel to the toes. If this should become inflamed as a result of an injury or overuse, a condition that is referred to plantar fasciitis may develop. The pain is typically felt in the arch or heel area of the foot, and walking may be difficult. There are several stretches that can be performed which can relieve a portion of the pain. These include calf stretches which can be accomplished by standing on a step and dropping one heel at a time so a stretch can be felt. Rolling your heel on a round object can aid in loosening the foot muscles. Additionally, it helps the foot to stretch when the toes are pointed and flexed. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Leonora Fihman, DPM  from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Painful Plantar Warts

The location of a plantar wart is on the sole of the foot. It often develops in the heel area of the foot and grows into the skin. This is a result of consistent weight that is put on the heel while walking or standing. The fungus that causes this type of wart is known as the human papillomavirus (HPV) and is considered to be contagious. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this condition include a hard and callused area on the heel of the foot, and pain while bearing weight on the foot. Additionally, clotted blood vessels will often appear in the center, which look like tiny black dots. This type of fungus thrives in warm and moist places, which include public swimming pools and surrounding areas, and can easily spread by sharing socks or towels. If you would like information about proper treatment options for a plantar’s wart, please counsel with a podiatrist.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Leonora Fihman, DPM from California. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.
